Rage U13B Team advances to Final Four

Click to Enlarge “Why not us?”  That was the question posed to the Rage U13B team in early December as the girls began post-season training for the CYSA Association Cup.  Pointing out that no Rage team has made it to the finals since the 1999 Association Cup inception, coach Dan Copenhagen challenged the team to consider the possibility of success and use it as motivation. It seems they took him seriously.

After advancing from group play to the round of sixteen earlier this month, the Rage U13B team notched two victories this past weekend to advance to the Association Cup semi-finals.  Both matches were won in come-from-behind fashion, delivering immense drama for the parents and fans cheering from the sidelines.  Saturday’s 3-2 win over a skilled De Anza Freedom team was led by Sara Medor’s two second half goals, a first half goal from Lissi Knell, and solid midfield play from Kennedy Poplawski, Kasey Jensen and Sasha Greenlee.

Sunday’s quarterfinals match brought the talented Pleasanton U13-A team, a familiar competitor and a testament to the depth of talent inthe Rage girls’ program at this age level.  Following asecond half corner-kick goal by Brooke Campbell to knot the score at 1-1, Lissi Knell connected on a deadly strike from the top of the box to put the team ahead with less than six minutes to play.  The defense held once again to close out the victory at 2-1, with strong efforts coming from Aubry Wolff, Nicole Danner, Kelly Briggs and Kylie Zieker Click to Enlargeacross the back line.  Goal keepers Katie Bindert and Kasey Jensen have combined to hold opponents to an average of only one goal per game throughout the tournament.

On February 2 at 4:00 the U13-B team heads to the Danville Soccer Complex to face the Capital Valley Rush Frenzy of Northern Sacramento.  The winner advances to the finals on Super Bowl Sunday,  February 3 at 1:30.

01-17-08 In the first weekend of Association Cup play, the Rage U143A team showed their continued momentum from District III Cup, winning all three games in the qualifying rounds. In game 1 Rage faced Alameda in a strong offensive attack. Stephanie Little scored first off a "Header shot" from a perfect Danielle Homan corner kick. Next up, Danielle Lamarche with an unassisted straight attack. Final score: Rage 2-0
Rage faced 49er Crush from Placer next in a physical game. After two quick goals by Stephanie Little, the Placer team put out a full on defense. With Stephanie driving down the line, after awsome mid-field control by Devon Lutz, Megan Ash, and Marisa Victor it was a cross pass that found its way to Jessica Hopson's head for the next goal. Final score: Rage 3-0
In the final game of the weekend Rage faced a very talented Atwater team, but it was the strong RAGE defense that came into play with a great performance in the goal by Danielle Homan. The first goal came with a break away pass from Katie Cloonan to Stephanie Little. who carried past the defenders and found the goal. The second and third goal came from some aggresive play from Elena Victor in the mid field, and the unforgiving pressure of Jessica Klahr, who put both shots to the back of the net. Marisa Victor kept the pressure going with three breakaway shots, that were stopped by Atwaters goalkeeper. Atwater scored next on a penalty kick, that just fell off the fingertips of Homan. This was the only goal that Megan Clark, Autumn Whitney, Kristen Dumanski, and Cassie Scroggins would allow all weekend. Final score: Rage 3-1
Next up "Sweet Sixteen" round of play in Ripon. STAY TUNED

The Pleasanton Rage U14 D3B team owned their Association Cup bracket with a phenomenal weekend in Morgan Hill. The Rage girls first faced the Mt. Diablo Rebels on Saturday, and despite an aggressive offense and multiple shots on goal, tied 0-0. Sunday morning the Rage team came out ready for a win against Redwood San Carlos Spark. Erin O'Loughlin scored two blistering goals, and Devon Gold and Nicole Ponzini added one more each for a crushing 4-1 win. The Rage girls needed to win their third game of the weekend to advance in Association Cup, and they did just that, thanks to a 40-yard boot by Molly Rowse from her defender position, and outstanding goaltending by Natalie Tiongco and Shannon Easley. The Rage girls rallied to hold off the extremely physical Rohnert Park team, resulting in a satisfying 1-0 victory. The girls now advance to the Sweet 16 next week in Ripon.

Top Offensive Players:
Devon Gold, Brittany Jones, Erin O'Loughlin, Nicole Ponzini, Arielle Siegel, Karoline Van der Zee
Top Defensive Players:
Taylor Dorsey, Shannon Easley, Brittany Jones, Sarah Machado, Pascale Masri, Kara Matsune, Molly Rowse, Natalie Tiongco
